Pre-Wedding Photo Barcelona + Singlish Lessons
One of my favorite parts of doing Pre-Wedding Photo Barcelona sessions is getting to know people other cultures, as most of my clients come from abroad.
I’m a naturally curious person. In my inner-circle I’m famous for asking a never ending stream of questions. In fact, when I first met my boyfriend 5 years ago (!), he had a catch phrase for me, it was, “Oye…una preguntita…” Or in English…”Hey…just a quick question….” I love to learn about people and share from their wealth of experiences and knowledge. For me it’s always been like a free master-class letting people explain what they’ve learned and where they come from.
So it makes sense that during photo sessions with really cool and fun people from around the world, I’m going to ask questions! During this photo session with the lovely Christine and Leon, I got Singlish lessons!
For those of you unfamiliar with the term, “Singlish” is the colloquial language spoken in Singapore that combines traditional English with a skittles bag of other local languages like Mandarin, Tamil, Malay x infinity! This creole language has it’s own intonations and grammar, and is SUPER fun! Think of it like the slang you use with your group of friends, but in a big mixed bowl of dialects. (Hmmm…I’m using a lot of food metaphors…someone’s hungry!)
For example, during our photo session, Christine and Leon taught me, “Wait lah!” (Lah is used with different words to mean a million things, but usually it gives emphasis or importance, like here is means “Hold up!!” with a sense of urgency).
They also taught me about “Atas,” things (Snobby/posh places or people), and how to drink properly saying “Yumseng!” (Cheers!)
I love learning these little culture details about people as we make our way about town taking beautiful photos. It’s like getting a small insight into their world and life in Singapore.
During Christine and Leon’s pre-wedding photo Barcelona session we visited:
- the Gothic Quarter
- Sagrada Familia
- Park Guell
- Barceloneta Beach
Their session was a half-day session and Christine was even able to change outfits once. The fabulous Nikoleta did her hair and make up! Doesn’t she look amazing? For the rest of their trip to Barcelona, the couple went to a super fun Barca football/soccer match and shopped for wedding details like jewelry from Channel! Their wedding is coming soon this February!!! Yay!
Thank you so much again Christine and Leon, I feel so grateful to meet fun and interesting people like you guys who share part of their culture with me!
